Creative Creation at St Augustine’s School
Pupils and staff from four primary schools and St Augustine’s of
Canterbury joined Bishop Declan and representatives of the Clifton Diocese Education Department to take part in an Environment project organised through the Chaplaincy at St Augustine’s.
Over the summer term they have been looking at the Creation Story from the Bible; thinking about God’s world around us and how we are charged to take care of it. This culminated in the fun day during which we watched a challenging play by Priorswood School helping us to realise the importance of every tree. For the performance they wore wonderful animal masks which they had made.
This was followed by exciting activities organised by the Art, Food,
RE and Science Departments. We then came together for a time of celebration and worship. Pupils from Archbishop Cranmer School lit candles while Bishop Declan led our opening prayer. St Georges performed a very moving Creation dance and Kingston St Mary pupils read their reflective poems about trees and life. Bishop Declan reflected on Creation and how we view the seventh day, not only
God’s day of rest, but a time when we can take time to appreciate the world around us.
There was a display of beautiful banners on the theme of creation from Arch Bishop Cranmer School and every pupil attending the day brought with them a fish constructed out of recycled materials to put in the net of a boat made by pupils from the Emmaus department at St Augustine’s, again using recycling.
The morning ended with a bring and share lunch, each school providing something for a wonderful spread.
It was a very successful morning everyone had a wonderful time but was also challenged to think differently about the world around us and how we care for Creation.
