The Geography Department seeks to create an interesting and relevant Course that stimulates our pupils whilst meeting the demands of the National Curriculum.
In our 1998 OFSTED Inspection the Department was praised for achieving GCSE results significantly above the National Average. In 2005 the Department was graded GOOD.
Year 7
Term 1—Settlement and Map work
Looks at the local area and includes the Growth and Development of Taunton. Skills covered include map reading, data handling and interpretation, photography analysis, data collection and presentation.
Settlement studies include an investigation into the changes in shopping patterns and the associated effects on Greenfield sites.
Term 2—Economic Activities
Agriculture: Looks at the factors which influence farming activities locally, nationally and globally. Changes in agriculture and future developments.
Weather: We investigate what causes our weather; its effects and how microclimates can affect planning decisions.
Term 3—A River Investigation
Do rivers need managing? Pupils study the ways in which a river changes along its course. Features, pollution, flooding and uses. In groups pupils carry out a river fieldwork investigation along the River Tone
Year 8
Term 1—Europe
Europe in general - comparing different countries through data analysis.
How do we travel to Europe—Sea, Air or Euro-tunnel?
Focus on Italy. Comparing the different regions of Italy. How do the North and South differ and what measures are being taken to help the South.
Term 2—Conservation
Starts at the local school level of environmental management and improvement. Resource management looks at the National Parks in England and Wales and the possible conflicts that arise. The positives and negatives of tourism in Kenya.
An Environmental Quality investigation. Global Environmental problems. Acid Rain. Global warming. Is Antarctica worth saving?
Term 3—Contrasts in Development
A world perspective. How can we compare the standards of living in different countries
Focus on development in Kenya. Contrasts in development. Rural pressures; urban slums. Tourism in Kenya.
Year 9
Term 1—The Evolution of the Landscape
The earth’s structure. Plate tectonics. Fold mountains. Earthquakes. Volcanoes. The impact of earthquakes and volcanoes on human activities. Living with the constant threat of disaster. How do rich and poor countries cope with natural disasters?
Term 2—Ecosystems
Concentrating on rain forests—what is happening to the rain forest? Is it to late to save it?
Term 3—Contrasts in Development
Disaster and Aid—The Asian Tsunami
