The Curriculum
The department follows National Curriculum guidelines for PE. All children in Years 7, 8 and 9 are involved in athletics, gymnastics, outdoor education, dance and games. In games, students take part in the following sports: Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Football, Badminton, Table Tennis, Cricket, Rounders, VolleyBall, Tennis and Basketball.
In Years 10 and 11 students follow two curriculum pathways. In year 10 all students take the GCSE PE short course which is almost completely practical. Students are assessed in their ability to perform, coach, organize and officiate in a number of sports of their choice. In year 11 students are given the opportunity to stretch their PE experience by following courses in Blue tooth Dance mats, Interactive rowing and Health Related Fitness programmes designed by themselves.
Pupils in Years 10 and 11 have the opportunity to follow a full GCSE PE Course. The course is based around 40% theory and 60% practical. Four activities will be chosen from the following practical areas:- Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Football, Basketball, Cricket, Rounders, Table tennis, Tennis, Athletics and Badminton. The theory paper covers health related exercise, sport and society, sport in schools, sport in the community, social issues and the Olympics.
Pupils also have the opportunity to follow a BTEC First in Sport. This is a work related course that is designed to prepare students for a job in the Sports Industry. It is worth two GCSE’s and covers Sports Preparation, Practical Sport, Health and Safety and The Body and Sport. Students spend much of the course off site learning about the Sports Industry, how it is organized and how to be successful whilst working within that environment.
Students who follow the GCSE or BTEC course are also given the opportunity to take courses in sports coaching. These students are active in local primary schools where they help at festivals of sport and inter primary sports competition.
Within the timetable all pupils receive four hours of PE a fortnight across both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. At Key Stage 4, pupils who opt for GCSE PE receive up to nine hours a fortnight which includes theory, practical and mainstream PE. All pupils in Key Stage 4 also have the opportunity to follow either a JSLA or JFO course.
Extra Curricular Activities
The department also offers a variety of extra-curricular PE and sport both before school, lunchtime and after-school. Below is an example of the clubs that go on in a typical week.

School Trips
School trips and sports tours are an essential part of a students development. On these trips our students gain valuable cultural and social experiences. The PE department tries to run one sports tour and one visit to a major sporting competition every year. In the last three years we have run sports tours to Italy, Austria and Holland which can be viewed in the gallery section of the website. We have also taken parties to Wimbledon and Championship Football matches at Plymouth Argyle.
External Club Links
Having given our students a taster of a variety of sports we then try to move them to the next level by putting them in contact with sports clubs in the local area. Below is a list of sports clubs with contact details should you want to take your participation further.
