St. Augustine’s School, Taunton
"Stories" Whole-school Assembly,
Fri. 10/3/06.

(Fr. Bob Rainbow)

Intro. idea of "stories;"

I liked my own primary school when the teacher said- ‘I’ll read you a story!!’

Imagine the scene as you listen:

"Narnia- Prince Caspian" disc, Track 7 (Up to "All dwarves snore.")

Bible stories- men with long beards??- just a symbol of wisdom,

(like one’s gran or nan is often wiser than our parents!)

BUT so many bible stories are re- YOUNG people!!

Cf. apostles- called by Jesus and left their father in the boat- obviously fit & well.

A story about a young man called Gideon-

his father’s mentioned, and he gets cheeky, like a youngster; but with God!
Judges 6:1-10, 7:2-21.

Or a young king who gets sexy!! (Surprising amount of sex in the bible!)

2 Sam. 11:2-12:15.

Now a story from today- a story from one of you- just as powerful in its own way as what we have heard in the bible.

Emma- Emma Power- please come up now, and tell them what you told me.
(Applause after.)

The POWER of ‘story;’ conveying truth, sometimes through fictional stories, often through real stories of real people and how they have changed their lives.
If anyone wants to find out more about their stories and what they mean, please see me, Liz, the RE staff or anyone who can be trusted with your truth.

Questions like-
"IS there a God?"
"DOES he like us?"
"Why is there evil in the world if there’s a loving God?"
"Why can’t we do just what we like?"
etc.

Be aware of your OWN story- and treasure its ups and downs. But God has not finished writing yours yet!
